Midnight Train: Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad
February 19, 2018
Blountstown Public Library, 17731 N Pear St, Blountstown, FL 32424 / 6 p.m.

Calhoun County Public Library is proud to present "Midnight Train: Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad," on Monday, February 19, at 6:00 pm in the Blountstown Library Heritage Room. In this live performance, artist and playwright, Mary Kelly, portrays Harriet Tubman during her years as a slave, her journey to freedom, and her endeavors to help others flee northward.

As though she has stepped through in time, Mary speaks with Harriet's voice, telling her inspirational story of triumph and survival under the harshest of conditions. Through song, movement, and audience participation, she carries her viewers along on a voyage into the past.

Mary J. Kelly is a masterful storyteller, teaching artist and published playwright, and has performed for over 30 years in schools, colleges, businesses and organizations. She has a MFA in theatre/ communications and a BFA in theatre education from Arizona State University-Tempe. She is the executive director of the Association of Florida Teaching Artists, Inc., an association of professional artists who offer educational instruction to young people and the community to develop and enhance educational experiences through the arts. Mary is an artist on the Florida State Touring Roster, a Wolf Trap Teaching Artist and an Arts Integration/Drama Specialist. She believes we share similar joys and tears - that oneness comes through in our stories.

The program starts with a 45-minute performance with Mary J. Kelly portraying Harriet Tubman, followed by a 15-minute questions and answer session with Ms. Kelly acting as researcher. This presentation is made possible by a traveling grant from the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs.
